Approach
Meetings and Examination
An appropriate framework for thorough and respectful conversations is very important to me. Both during the initial discussions and follow-up examinations, there should be an in-depth and age-appropriate engagement with the child, as well as detailed conversations with the family members.
The central question is: What are the child’s needs?
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The field of child and adolescent psychiatry often requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, and psychologists are involved as needed. Working with the school, for example, is sometimes beneficial after consulting with the legal guardians.
Diagnostics
After a thorough medical history, a comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatric evaluation is conducted. During the initial consultation, not only are the current issues discussed, but also the individual’s life history and social environment of the child or adolescent are examined.
The personalized treatment plan is based on a holistic medical approach, treating both somatic and psychological aspects equally. Developmental issues, neurological conditions, and child psychiatric disorders are identified and properly treated. Naturally, the parents and the psychosocial environment of the children and adolescents are included in the treatment plan.
Another focus is transition. This means that I refer my adolescent patients (starting at the age of 18) with chronic conditions to specialized colleagues in adult medicine in a safe, timely, and quality-assured manner. Relevant networks are continuously expanded.
